Otto Dean Modlin

Otto Dean Modlin, 60, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at his residence in Nevada, Mo., surrounded by family. Otto was born on Aug. 15, 1960, in Kansas City, Mo., to Larry Lee and Marynell (Blasengym) Modlin. He married Kathy Anne Baker on March 5, 2015, in Eureka Springs, Ark., and she survives of the home.

Otto drove a truck for the past 43 years and owned and operated his own truck “Miss Bessie," making long hauls coast to coast. He was a member of the ODIDA Trucking Association. Otto loved NASCAR and local Dirt Track Racing. He was very mechanically inclined on engines and loved his dogs “Sugar” and “Julie."

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Kathy, include his children, Curtis Madden (Amy), Overland Park, Kan., Sonja Weyant, Colorado, Crystal Modlin, Harwood, Mo., Nathan Modlin, Nevada, Michael Baker (Dena), Walker, Mo., and Kyle Baker, Nevada; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his mother, Marynell Modlin, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; his siblings, Vicki Jo Smith (Marion), Osborn, Mo., Leslie Roberts (Terry) Maysville, Mo., Kathy Case (Duane), Independence, Mo., Donna Wallace, Independence, Lorie Smith, El Dorado Springs, Suzanna Coonts (Jerry), El Dorado Springs David Swan, Nevada, William Modlin (Kristie), Nevada, and Paul Modlin (Angie), Moundville, Mo.; brother-in-law, Terry Kessner; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend and mentor, Gene Burchell and his wife, Vonnie. He was preceded in death by his father; two sisters, Marie Cantrell and Mary Ann Kessner; one brother, Gary Coe; a grandson, Lukas Whaley; a great-nephew, Jaxon Smith; and his grandfather, Pete Blasengym, who was his inspiration for his lifelong passion for trucking.

Otto will be remembered as a kind loving family man who always put his faith in God and his family first of all things. He always put others first and took great pride in his work. Later in life he was able to attain his dream Peterbilt “Miss Bessie." He and his wife Kathy enjoyed their life on the road together and their travels.

Otto will be missed by all who knew him locally and in his trucking community as he was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 31, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Those in attendance will be asked to maintain social distancing and are asked to wear face masks to protect themselves and others.
