Swearingen ties for 41st in Colorado

Nevada's Owen Swearingen scored a pair of birdies and a tie for 41st place out of a field of 52 at the American Junior Golf Association's Hale Irwin tournament this week on the Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster, Colo.

Fresh off his second-place finish in the MSHSAA Class 3 state championship, the incoming Nevada High School senior shot a combined 54-hole score of 239 (+23), highlighted by a birdie on the second hole he played (the par-4 no. 2) and another one on the par-3 no. 4 in his third round.

Swearingen's best round was his first, when he shot back-to-back 39s for a 6-over-par 78. He shot an 82 in round two, and a 79 in round three.

Owen Cornmesser of Fort Collins, Colo., shot a 214 (-2) and won the event in a sudden-death playoff.
