Locker Room talk with Skylur Mashek
Editor’s note: Locker Room talk is a piece where every week the Nevada Daily Mail will interview a high school athlete and ask them a series of questions. This week's guest is Nevada High School senior Skylur Mashek.
Who is your hero?
I’d have to say Coach Beachler. He treats coaching like it’s more than just a sport. He teaches us how to approach life and teaches us the right ways to do things both on and off the field. Like a father figure in some ways.
Who is your favorite teammate, regardless of what sport they play?
That's tough, but I'd have to say Kenneth Johnson. We grew up together and we played in the same sports growing up. We’re pretty close and he’s such a down to earth guy. Real fun to talk to and knows how to get at it.
What is your favorite sport to compete in, and what is your favorite sport to watch either at home or on your phone?
Football all the way around. You don’t get to have that much contact in any other sport. It’s so fun to play and it’s fun to watch too. I don’t really understand other sports on TV, but I love watching college football, but I really enjoy watching high school football too.
Let's say Nevada High School is looking to add a sport to their athletic calendar that they do not currently have. Nevada High School Athletic Director David Hawks and Nevada R-5 Superintendent Tyson Beshore come up to you and ask what sport they should add. What sport are you choosing?
I’m choosing rugby, because I think it would be cool. It’s just football but a bit different. I don’t know a whole lot about it, but from the clips I see online it seems like it would be a fun sport. It looks a lot like football but with a soccer aspect to it.
What advice would you give someone who is going through a rough time?
It always ends up for the best on the other end. There are things you can learn from going through a rough time and if you can learn from those things, you will come out a lot better at the end.
What are some of your hobbies that don't include sports?
I play video games sometimes. It’s fun to just relax and hop on Call of Duty and play with friends. We will also play Madden or UFC too.
What motivates you to work hard on the field?
I like to see myself get better and I'm a pretty competitive person. I don’t like being bad at anything, so I just want to work to be the best I can. I don't think it’s fair to the people around me like coaches or teammates if I’m not giving 100% effort and being the best I can, because they get pulled down with me.
What coach in your athletic career do you feel like has helped you out the most?
Coach Beachler again, just because of the way he helps out with whatever you need. He’s always there for you and teaches you more than just the game. He has two different types of modes he’s in. During football season, he’s more serious and getting with it, but he does switch it from on and off the field.
What is your biggest fear?
Failure. Failing at any sucks, and it’s always there in the back of your mind. I don’t like losing or failing. It motivates you to be better.
Last time on Locker Room Talk, senior Maddy Majors wanted to ask you what was your motivation to carry through hard times and adversity?
Probably just knowing that it will get better. I’m close to my faith, and it says that there are things that can be learned and at the end you will be better. That really helps me carry through adversity knowing that everything will be okay.
Next week on Locker Room talk, we will be doing a Coaches Edition for the rest of the summer, and it will be Nevada High School Head Football Coach Wes Beachler. Do you have a question for him?
I would ask if there has been a life lesson that he has learned from one of his players?
