Missouri State Highway Patrol releases Labor Day holiday statistics
The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) has released preliminary statistics for the 2023 Labor Day holiday weekend, revealing that 12 people tragically lost their lives in traffic crashes while no fatalities occurred in boating incidents or drownings.
The counting period for the Labor Day holiday extended from 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4. During this period, the MSHP investigated nine of the reported traffic fatalities, with the Joplin Police Department handling two cases, and the Springfield Police Department investigating one traffic fatality.
The preliminary traffic statistics indicate a total of 306 crashes, resulting in 146 injuries and nine fatalities. Additionally, law enforcement arrested 119 individuals for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and made 19 drug-related arrests.
On the boating front, the MSHP reported 11 boating crashes with two injuries but no fatalities during the holiday weekend. There were also two arrests for boating while intoxicated (BWI). Fortunately, there were no drownings or drug-related arrests related to boating incidents.
As the Labor Day weekend came to a close, authorities continue to stress the importance of safe driving and responsible boating practices, urging the public to exercise caution on the roads and waterways.
