MoDNR to plug more than 200 abandoned oil wells in Vernon County

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is expected to receive more than $5 million to plug abandoned oil wells in Vernon County. Anyone who discovers an abandoned well is encouraged to contact the department.

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will receive more than $5 million from the U.S. Department of the Interior to plug hundreds of abandoned oil wells. The project will focus on former oil production sites in Vernon County. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
