LAMAR — In an atmosphere that felt more like the state championship than a Big 8 West title match, the Nevada High School volleyball team lost to rival Lamar 3-1 on the road Thursday night. The win secured a regular-season conference championship for the home team, which improved to 23-4 overall and 6-0 in Big 8 West play. There may have been more pink involved than when she first envisioned it, but Nevada High School head volleyball coach Kori Dodson saw out of her team Tuesday night inside Wynn Gymnasium precisely what she was looking for before the season started. “From the very beginning, I remember saying we have so many hitters, so many options, we can really take it to them. ...

BRONAUGH — The Bronaugh High School volleyball team may have gone 0-2 against Miami and Northeast Vernon County on Dig Pink and Senior Night Friday, but head coach Whitney Hinkle marked it down as a win in her book. "My girls made the most out of our last home game of the season tonight by playing as a team and just enjoying the little wins along the way," stated Hinkle, whose squad lost 3-0 to both visiting teams in the triangular. ...

The Sheldon High School volleyball team picked up win no. 3 on the season with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-14 home sweep over Hume on Thursday. Despite missing two of the team's three seniors, the Lady Panthers got sparks from underclassmen Britain Korsi (seven kills, three digs, two aces) and Emma Kleeman (13 digs, five assists, one ace) — while regular starters Deborah Lamb (14 digs, three kills, two blocks, two aces) and Ella Kleeman (14 assists, 11 digs, seven aces) contributed big numbers, as well...

The Northeast Vernon County High School volleyball team was without one of its starting setters in a home match against Ballard on Tuesday, and it showed after the Lady Knights dropped the first two sets (17-25, 23-25). But everything clicked for NEVC in the third set, and the Lady Knights were able to storm back (25-14, 25-18, 15-4) to win the match...

The Nevada High School volleyball team left Monett Tuesday evening with a clean sweep. The Lady Tigers varsity squad held off the Lady Cubs' comeback bid in the third set for a 25-16, 25-11, 25-22 victory. Emma Leisure recorded 17 digs and four aces, Kyrsten Owen added 18 assists, and Trinity Gayman had eight kills and four blocks...

WALKER — Despite her first name, Charity Middleton is not a very generous opponent on the volleyball court. The Sheldon High School Lady Panthers found that out the hard way Monday evening inside the gym of Northeast Vernon County — where the Lady Knights' junior outside hitter collected 11 kills and smashed nine aces en route to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-15 sweep by NEVC...

The Nevada High School freshmen volleyball team travelled to Cassville on Saturday for a tournament — and came home with a pair of wins. The Lady Tigers opened pool play with a 25-13, 25-21, 24-26 win over Neosho, before falling to Republic 12-25, 13-25, 10-25...

Friday came very close to being a sick day for the Nevada High School volleyball team. After the Lady Tigers cruised to a two-set lead against visiting Seneca Thursday night inside Wynn Gymnasium, they let their guard down and allowed the Lady Indians to win the next two sets and force a fifth — which Nevada eked out by two points for the thrilling, nail-biting, and nearly stomach-turning victory...

Tuesday may have marked the Nevada High School volleyball team’s 19th match — but it also ushered in a new season. And so far, the Lady Tigers are undefeated. “This was our first conference game, and it’s a new season now. That’s the way we’ve got to look at it. ...

The Nevada High School volleyball team got an advanced look at their home opponent for Tuesday at the Dr. Jeffrey Knutzen Carl Junction Classic on Saturday. The Lady Tigers went 1-3 at the tournament, with their lone win (25-9, 27-25) coming against McDonald County — which NHS will host tonight inside Wynn Gymnasium...

Following a 3-2 road loss to Clinton on Wednesday, one in which the Nevada High School volleyball team surrendered a two-set lead, a straight-sets domination of Smith-Cotton Thursday evening inside Wynn Gymnasium was just what the doctor ordered. In fact, after all the close matches they have been on the losing side of this season, the Lady Tigers were aching for a victory like that (25-11, 25-20, 25-12) for much longer than just a day...

The Nevada Middle School volleyball team bounced back from a sweep at the hands of Webb City on Monday by winning three of four against East Newton on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers struggled against the Cardinals — with the eighth-grade A team falling 25-10, 25-7; the eighth-grade B team losing 25-8, 25-8; the seventh-grade A team going down 15-25, 19-25; and the seventh-grade B team dropping its match 25-10, 25-12...

The Northeast Vernon County High School volleyball team earned a pair of victories Monday evening at a triangular hosted by Hume. The Lady Knights took care of Bronaugh first with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 sweep before needing four sets to best the hosting Lady Hornets 25-13, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18...

The Nevada High School volleyball team got back on the winning track at a tournament hosted by William Chrisman on Saturday — beating Center 25-1, 25-7 and Junction City 25-19, 25-17. The Lady Tigers (3-8-1) also split with Belton 25-19, 22-25 and lost to Odessa 22-25, 17-25 and the host Bears 19-25, 19-25...

The Bronaugh High School volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday night at Sheldon, earning a hard-fought 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 sweep. "We finally played as a team from start to finish tonight and all the pieces fell into place," BHS head coach Whitney Hinkle stated. "They were talking it up and trusting each other, which has been a goal of mine since day one. It felt so good to finally see them playing hard and with confidence."...

The Nevada High School volleyball team dropped to 1-5 following a five-set loss in its home opener Thursday against Pleasant Hill — but that record can be deceiving. The Lady Tigers have played some stiff competition to start the season and learned something new with every loss...

Nevada High School served up its first victory of the volleyball season Monday at Neosho, with the varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen squads combining to pull off the road sweep. The Lady Tigers on varsity topped Neosho in four sets — 25-20, 25-10, 30-32, 25-11 — to improve to 1-4 on the season...

The Sheldon High School volleyball team opened Golden Valley Vernon County Conference play in winning fashion on Monday, beating Ballard three sets to one on the Lady Panthers' home court. Deborah Lamb led the way with 11 kills, three aces, and two blocks...

The Nevada Middle School volleyball team returned home from road matches at Fort Scott on Monday without a victory. The seventh-grade B squad lost 25-14, 25-13, while the seventh-grade A team fell 25-21, 25-22. The eighth-grade B team had no better luck, losing 25-12, 25-13 — but the eighth-grade A team did pull through in its second set before ultimately losing 15-25, 25-16, 12-15...

The Nevada Middle School fall sports season got off to a winning start on Wednesday, with the football and volleyball teams both earning victories in their first contests. The Tigers travelled to Cassville and pulled off a sweep on the gridiron — first via a 36-22 win by the seventh-graders, then a 14-6 victory in the eighth-grade game...

The Sheldon High School volleyball team dropped to 0-5-1 following a road sweep at the hands of Lakeland on Tuesday (25-12, 25-19, 25-5) — though the junior varsity did pick up a 25-18 win. “Overall, we took this match as a learning experience and have some things to work on before facing Exeter on Friday,” SHS head coach Emily Godsey stated...

WALKER — Three is better than five. That was the takeaway Thursday night after the Northeast Vernon County High School volleyball team defeated Thomas Jefferson Independent in straight sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) — the Lady Knights’ first match this season that did not go the distance to five...

The Nevada High School volleyball team travelled to Fort Scott on Tuesday for a triangular with Anderson County and the hosting Lady Tigers. After losing to Anderson County in straight sets 26-24, 25-21, the crimson and gray took Fort Scott to three sets but ultimately fell 20-25, 25-21, 19-25...

The Northeast Vernon County High School volleyball team nearly blew another two-set lead Tuesday at McAuley Catholic — but the Lady Knights survived a fifth set to improve to 2-1 on the season. NEVC started off strong with 25-20, 25-15 wins in the opening sets, before losing 14-25, 24-26 in the next two. The Lady Knights eked out a 15-12 win in the fifth and final set to claim the match...

The Cottey College volleyball team earned a sweep to begin the William Penn Labor Day Tournament on Saturday, but that would be the highlight of the team's weekend trip to Oskaloosa, Iowa. After topping Iowa Wesleyan 25-18, 25-20, 26-24, the Comets failed to win another set — losing to Avila 25-22, 25-8, 25-17; Mount Mary 25-17, 25-19, 25-11; and Waldorf 25-9, 25-23, 25-18...

The Sheldon High School volleyball team won a set during pool play at the Jasper Invitational on Saturday, but were bounced out of the bracket by the top seed. The Lady Panthers — who were without senior setter Madison Garren, who was competing at a cross country meet — battled with Jasper's JV to open pool play but ultimately lost both sets, 25-22 and 25-18...

WALKER — In its season-opener Tuesday night at Lakeland, the Northeast Vernon County High School volleyball team learned it can come back from a two-set deficit. In the team’s home-opener Thursday against Liberal, the Lady Knights found out how it feels to surrender a 2-0 lead...

The Nevada High School volleyball team went down in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 26-24) to open its season Thursday night at Mt. Vernon. Setter Jade Feller contributed 30 assists, while fellow senior and libero Grace Barnes racked up 17 digs. Sophomore Delaney Hope led the way at the net with 12 kills and seven blocks...

The Bronaugh High School volleyball team opened its season with a pair of home losses this week. The Lady Cats managed to win their second set in the season-opener against Pleasanton on Tuesday, but eventually fell 4-2 (12-25, 25-22, 10-25, 13-25). "I'm very proud of the effort put forth by our team against Pleasanton," BHS head coach Whitney Hinkle stated. ...

Baptist Bible College made things interesting in the third set, but it was not nearly enough to spoil the home opener for Cottey College volleyball Tuesday night inside the Hinkhouse Center. The Comets fed off the energy of the student section and cheering family members in attendance to sweep the Patriots 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20)...

The Nevada High School girls tennis team won its season opener 7-2 at Monett on Tuesday — led by wins by Hallie Elkinton in no. 2 singles (8-5), Susannah Kimmell in no. 3 singles (8-1), Alissa Stutesman in no. 4 singles (8-1), Abbi Baldwin in no. 5 singles (8-3), Kourtney Vestal in no. 6 singles (8-1), Baldwin and Laura Kimmell in no. 2 doubles (8-0), and Stutesman and Vestal in no. 3 doubles (8-2)...

The Cottey College volleyball team opened its season in the Little Apple this past weekend, winning one of four matches. The Comets got things started Friday at the Thunder Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., with a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-15, 25-13) of the Tigers of Central Christian College...

Nevada High School head volleyball coach Kori Dodson wanted her team to be more competitive this year, so from the first day of practice she and her coaching staff started instituting more drills. The goal, even during conditioning: to get the girls’ intensity up and keep it there — a strategy Dodson is confident will pay off after the first month of matches...

Only one Sheldon High School athlete has medaled in cross country in program history. Now a senior, Madison Garren should also be the first one to do it twice. She might as well play some volleyball while she’s at it. “Let’s run it back to Columbia!” stated SHS cross country coach Mike Galimberto of his lone runner this fall. ...

It has been 10 years since Whitney Hinkle manned the sidelines of a Bronaugh High School volleyball game. But when the Lady Cats needed a new coach this fall, she decided to dust off her whistle and give it another go. “I’ve been super impressed with the effort, because I did not know what to expect,” said Hinkle, who watched from the bleachers when the team won only two games last season, both against rival Sheldon. ...

With three of the seven players on her volleyball team making their debuts this season, Hume High School head coach Becky Bryant will be focused on fundaments: communication, positioning, and — most importantly — having fun. "The players have good attitudes and are putting in the work to make improvements each day," said Bryant, who graduated four seniors and returns two starters, Kaitlyn Kaiser and Abby Harris (both outside hitters)...

Friday marked the final day of the first week of practice for Missouri State High School Activities Association fall sports teams, including the Nevada football and volleyball squads. The Cottey College volleyball team went unbeaten in pool play at the three-team Association of Independent Institutions conference tournament Friday in Lincoln, Ill. — but the Comets will still be the No. 2 seed on Saturday and have to play No. 3 Crowley's Ridge for a chance to battle No. 1 Lincoln Christian in the championship match...

A weeks-long wait for Cottey College volleyball to resume its spring season was over in about an hour Monday afternoon inside the Hinkhouse Center, as the Comets cruised past Kansas Christian College 25-10, 25-14, and 25-14. The match marked the program's first since March 13, after which COVID-19 protocols called for postponements against Baker University, College of the Ozarks, Crowley's Ridge College, Lincoln Christian University, and Missouri Valley College...

The Bronaugh Lady Wildcats easily dispatched Dadeville in the third-place game of the Golden City Invitational girls' basketball tournament. The decisive 60-31 victory was two weeks in the making as the game had previously been rescheduled due to inclement weather. ...

Though the Nevada High School volleyball season ended far sooner than head coach Ashley Thoreson might have hoped, the individual player honors keep coming. On top of the All-District and All-Region honors she already received, Lady Tigers junior Rilie Good has added All-State to her list of postseason honors. Good earned an honorable mention in this year's voting...

The Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team's season may be over, but the accolades keep coming. Lady Tigers head coach Ashley Thoreson announced via email Wednesday afternoon that two of her players earned All-Region honors for the 2013 season. Rilie Good and Morgan McNeley both played integral roles in the Lady Tigers' success this season and their contributions earned them both spots on the All-Region second team...

Both Hume and Bronaugh fell in the Class 1, District 11 volleyball tournament. Hume advanced to the tournament's final round, dispatching Northeast Vernon County in two sets, then besting Rich Hill in a best-of-three series to advance to the championship match, taking on the Liberal Lady Bulldogs...

ADRIAN, Mo. -- The Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team got back into action for the final time in the regular season and put forth one of its most consistent, strongest performances of the season against the Lady Blackhawks of Adrian High School Thursday night...

The Class 1, District 11 volleyball tournament is scheduled to start Monday, in the Tiger Den at Rich Hill High School, with three matches. Bronaugh will open the tournament against Miami-Amoret, at 4:30 p.m., followed by a matchup between Rich Hill and Sheldon, at approximately 5:45, and Hume will round out the night against Northeast Vernon County. ...

BRONAUGH -- The Lady Hornets of Hume High School wrapped up the Golden Valley/Vernon County Conference volleyball championship Monday night with victories over Northeast Vernon County and Ballard at Bronaugh High School. The Lady Hornets downed the Lady Knights in two sets, by the final scores of 25-17 and 25-10 to make their way into the championship match. ...

The Bronaugh Lady Wildcats volleyball team won a pair of matches at Arma, Kan., Monday night. Bronaugh defeated Chetopa in three sets, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-13, and Northeast-Arma in two, by the final scores of 25-23 and 25-12. Cydnee Piper led the Lady Wildcats with 14 kills, while Lora Shaw was credited a team-high five blocks...

The Nevada Middle School's seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams began play in the Tri-County Tournament Monday, with mixed results. Head coach Marsha Hooper's seventh graders entered the tournament as the second seed and showed why they were ranked so high, defeating Joplin South in two sets, by the final scores of 25-18 and 25-13, in the first round of the tournament at McDonald County. ...

The Nevada Middle School seventh-grade volleyball team finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-2 and has earned the second seed in the Tri-County postseason tournament, which will be played next week. Head coach Marsha Hooper's squad will enter the tournament seeded behind only Carthage, which took the top spot. ...

Hume edged Bronaugh in a three-game set in volleyball Tuesday night, with Bronaugh winning the first game 25-20. Hume bounced back though in the second, for a 25-15 decision. Then in the third and deciding game, Hume squeaked out a 25-21 decision. Hume improved to 4-0 in the conference with the victory...

BOLIVAR -- The Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team took to the road again Monday night, taking on the Lady Liberators of Bolivar High School. The Lady Liberators stayed in the match throughout its duration, but the Lady Tigers were still able to close it out in two sets, by the final scores of 25-21 and 25-13. ...

The Nevada Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams got back into action Monday night and came out of their contests against Joplin South with mixed results. Head coach Marsha Hooper's seventh graders had little trouble getting past South as both the A and B teams earned two-set victories. Hooper's A team defeated South by the final scores of 25-17 and 25-18, while the B team won by a considerably larger margin, 25-9 and 25-10...

Head coach Marsha Hooper's seventh-grade squads opened the night with a split, winning the A-team match by the final scores of 25-5 and 25-5 before dropping the B-team match, 28-26 and 25-22. ...

The Nevada Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams were both in action Monday evening, hosting Fort Scott Middle School. Fort Scott's seventh-grade volleyball team swept Nevada's seventh graders, winning the A-team match in three sets, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-19, and the B-team match also in three, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17. Nevada's eighth graders won the A-team match over Fort Scott, 25-19 and 25-21, but Fort Scott prevailed in the B-team match, 25-14 and 25-12...

HARRISONVILLE -- The Lady Wildcats of Harrisonville High School swept the Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball teams in a tripleheader Thursday night, capping the evening with a two-game win in the varsity match by the final scores of 25-23 and 25-23. "Tonight was a tough game for us," Lady Tigers head coach Ashley Thoreson said. "We could not seem to get any momentum and had a hard time with ball control. We did not play to our potential and we will evaluate our play and improve from it."...

Nevada Middle School is set to host its annual volleyball skills practice and clinic Aug. 19-21, in the Nevada Middle School gymnasium. The clinic is open to all fifth- through eighth-grade girls interested in playing volleyball. The $25 registration fee includes instruction, a clinic T-shirt and snacks for all three days...

Nevada Lady Tigers head volleyball coach Ashley Thoreson announced Wednesday her plans to host summer volleyball camps for girls entering fourth through eighth grades, inside Wynn Gymnasium, at Nevada High School. Camp sessions for girls entering fourth through sixth grades will be held on June 25 and 26, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. There will be a $25 charge per participant to attend the camp and that price will include a camp T-shirt...

Local high school athletes will be featured in two all-star events, June 7 and 8, at Parkview High School. Football all-stars will compete in the 12th annual Sertoma Grin Iron Classic, an East vs. West competition, at 7:30 p.m., June 7, at JFK Stadium. For the second year, a girls' all-star volleyball tournament will take place in the Parkview High School gymnasium, starting at 1 p.m., June 8...

Another Nevada High School senior has announced a desire to continue her athletic career in college.
