One of the victims is moved to a waiting helicopter to be flown to a trauma center for surgery. One of the goals of transporting victims by helicopter is speed. Victim survival rates increase if they can be transported to a trauma center and a waiting surgeon within one hour of the incident occuring. In rural areas, this is a challenge because it can be a long time between the wreck occuring and emergency services being called to the scene. Even if the crash is witnessed, or an occupant calls 911, it can take twenty minutes or more to get first responders to the scene.
