Lady Tiger softball falls to Lamar
The Nevada Tiger softball team had to make a last-minute move to Lamar for its scheduled "home" game on Monday. The Tigers (2-8) lost 10-2 when Lamar broke open a close contest with four runs in the fourth inning, then tacked on single runs in both the sixth and seventh. Nevada scored both of its runs in the third to narrow the gap to 4-2 after Lamar had opened the game with a single and back-to-back home runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Julie King, Mallori Adams, Afton Baldwin and Tiffany Cartwright accounted for the Tigers' four-hit offense. Whitney Smith took the loss, allowing 13 hits with three strikeouts and no bases on balls. The Nevada junior varsity (1-5) won its first game of the season, 4-0, behind a strong pitching performance from Chanelle Braun. Braun shut out Lamar on a one-hitter with three strikeouts and four walks in the five-inning game. Kaci Kurtz had a two-run single, while Brittany Pettibon, Shawna Alexander and Erica Klinksick had the other three Nevada safeties. "Each game they've been getting better," said Nevada coach Chris Garzone, of the JV squad. "Tonight they put it all together and it paid off." El Dorado Springs Tournament On Saturday the Tigers picked up their second win of the season with a 10-6 win over the host team in the El Dorado Springs Tournament. The victory, in the consolation final, earned the Tigers a fifth-place finish in the six-team round robin tourney. They dropped the first two games, 12-8 to Stockton and 10-0 to Buffalo. Smith was the mound workhorse for Nevada, hurling all three games. Amanda Kitsmiller, Adams, Courtney Hinkle and Baldwin stroked two hits apiece in the Tigers' 13-hit attack. Nevada plays three games in three days, starting on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Webb City at home, then a make-up game against El Dorado Springs on Friday at 4 o'clock., also at home. On Saturday, the Tigers travel to Clinton for another make-up contest.
