100 Years Ago -- June 19, 1903

The street-paving question, we are sorry to state, is in a rather mixed up state and we fear that the work of paving Cherry Street will not be done in the very near future. The reasons for the delay are several however Mayor Wight says that if Mr. Quigley had come up with his part of the contract, the street would now be paved, at least half of it and the work would be going along nicely. Quigley first objected to changing the grade for his electric carline. He stated that the city had given him the present grade and he did not want to change it. The present grade is too high and of course the city doesn't want to pave at the proper grade and leave the carline above the pavement.

75 Years Ago -- June 19, 1928

Sneak thieves, at least two of them, visited the W.F. Norman home Monday night and swiped Mr. Norman's 100 gallon gasoline tank and the thirty gallons of gasoline it contained. The thieves came in a truck, which they used in hauling away the tank. Several times in the past, the tank had been "tapped" and to head off this practice, Norman placed a Yale lock on the tank. So just to head off Norman, the thieves who visited his home Monday night just took the tank, gasoline and lock, making a clean sweep.

50 Years Ago -- June 19, 1953 Total taxable property in Vernon County in 1953 declined $91,974 from the 1952 totals, figures in County Clerk Elva Dennings office reveal. An explanation for the major part of the decline is found in the loss of valuation of livestock in Vernon County. The biggest loss, of course, comes from cattle, which has been declining in price for over a year. A year ago, the 33,486 cattle in the county were evaluated at $1,601,835. Horses, sheep and poultry all showed substantial losses. There was a loss of 607 horses in the county during the year from 2,445 in 1952 to 1,838.
