100 Years Ago -- June 11, 1903
A telephone message received on Wednesday night from J.A. Daly says that the thief who stole Mr. Daly's team of horses and J.W. Bolton's wagon and harness had been captured at Thayer, Kan.. The stolen property was recovered. A telegram from Walnut, Kansas, stated that one of the horses lost a shoe on the road and that while the horse was being shod, Daly and Mr. Moore were eating lunch and the thief was turned over to a member of one of the Kansas Anti-Horse Thief Representative and when Messrs. Daly and Moore returned, the man had disappeared.
75 Years Ago -- June 11, 1928
A large number of members of the Radio Springs Golf were guests of the Butler Golf Club Sunday and all report having been cordially welcomed and royally entertained. During the afternoon and interesting and enjoyable tournament was held, the Nevada Club winning. George Swearingen of Nevada made the low medal score, 71, one stroke below par for the course. He also won the honors for the longest drive. BUSINESS UPDATE -- C.M. Gere, manager for the Kraft Cheese Company is the 86th shareholder in the Vernon County Agriculture Credit Corporation. 50 Years Ago -- June 11, 1953
SCHOOL NEWS -- The Board of Education of the Nevada R-5 School District met last night for its regular June meeting. It authorized the expansion of the Benton School site by acquiring property east of the present site. Authorized during the meeting, the sale at public auction of three houses on the north side of the Bryan School site. Also authorized the sale at auction of the following rural school buildings this summer: Glenwood, Green Springs, Sandstone, Woods, Oak Grove, Union and East Washington. The Board has studied the deeds and expressed the opinion that most of the rural centers would be difficult to retain when abandoned for school purposes. All the deeds to rural school buildings in the R-5 District except Longacre have reversionary clauses which provide that when the ground ceases to be used for school purposes it is lost to the district. WEATHER-- Missouri's current heat wave has claimed three lives. Nevada's reading of 101 is the high for Wednesday. More of the same brand of weather is forecast for today for the western part of the state but the east may have some relief in slightly lower temperatures.
