100 Years Ago -- December 2, 1903
The proposition to issue $90,000 in bonds to be used in building a municipal water works plant carried at Tuesday's special election by a two-thirds majority of thirty votes. The total number of votes cast was 967 -- 10 more votes than were cast at the last city election, although the vote cast at these elections is not a full vote.
Those favoring the proposal were jubilant when the vote was announced and seemed to fully appreciate the victory. The vote by wards is as follows: Ward 1 -Yes 214, No 80; Ward 2 Yes 98, No 43; Ward 3 -Yes 78, No 35, Ward 4 -Yes 90, No 121; 5th Ward-Yes 195, No 13. The total "Yes" votes 675, total of "No" votes 292, thus "Yes" two third majority wins the election.
5 Years Ago -- December 2, 1928
ENTERTAINMENT NEWS -- The showman's ideal of a picture that will "click" through every scene has been reached in "The Danger Rider" with the popular Hoot Gibson in the starring role. The film opened at the Star Theatre today. The picture is the funniest in which the star has appeared. Added to his capabilities as a purveyor of thrilling amusement, Hoot seems to have found himself as a comedian.
50 Years Ago -- December 2, 1953
HOLIDAY AROUND TOWN -- More than 5,000 see the Christmas parade Tuesday. The Rotary Club float won first with Epsilon Sigma Alpha, won second in the float contest. More than 5,000 crowded the Nevada Square last night to see the town's annual Christmas parade, many commented, "The best ever." Starting promptly at 7 o'clock, the parade moved along East Cherry, around the Square and out on South Cedar. Its pace was brisk and instead of requiring an estimated 45 minutes, the parade made the Square circuit in about 20 minutes. The weather for the parade as perfect, an almost balmy, quiet and cloudy night. The doors of many stores stood open during the evening as the first night of the shopping hours began of the Christmas season.
NEAR SHELDON -- Mrs. Jim Harrel is starting a laundry in the Bannister Building west of Waits. She will wash and spin-dry clothing and plans to add other equipment in the future. Mrs. Harrel has been employed at the Phillips 66 CafÈ for the past year.
A large number of persons attended the Open House at the Millers Saturday. They have opened a new electrical appliance store here.
