Lady Tigers climb over Lady Mountaineers

CARTHAGE, Mo. -- The Nevada Lady Tigers led throughout in an opening-round victory at the Carthage Lady Tiger Invitational on Monday.

The second-seed Tigers ran their win streak to five with a grind-it-out 63-53 win over the fifth-seed Mount Vernon Lady Mountaineers.

Guard Hillary Adams led a Tiger trio of double-digit scorers with 18 points. Junior post players Katie Rice and Lacy Leonard added 16 apiece.

"It was very nice to see the balance of scoring that our team showed," said Nevada coach Brent Bartlett.

Nevada (7-3) opened a 14-10 first-quarter lead and upped the margin to seven at the half, 28-21. The Tigers increased the lead to 46-34 at the end of the third period, then cruised home.

The Tigers held a decided edge at the charity stripe, outscoring Mount Vernon 16-5. Nevada hit 16 of 23, including nine of 13 in the final quarter, when the Lady Mountaineers, in a catch-up mode, was forced to foul. Adams sank 6 of 7 free throws in the period.

Nevada meets Joplin, the fourth seed, in a rubber game on Thursday at 6 p.m. Nevada and Joplin have split two previous contests.
