'We are not closing our business'

Wednesday, January 7, 2004

Rumors have been flying around Nevada about the possibility of one of its major supermarkets closing -- but rumors of its demise are unequivocally false, managers said. The rumors were so numerous that the manager of the store made a sign for both entrances which states "Due to extensive rumors we would like to inform you that we are not closing our business. We are here to serve you and your families for many years to come. Thank you for shopping here at Rameys!"

Don Randal, manager, said that the rumors he was hearing became so numerous he even began to wonder. "I sent an e-mail to my boss, he's the kind of guy who never seems to answer his phone or responds to messages on answering machines, but I had an answer back in 15 minutes from him telling me that the store will stay open for a long, long time."

The company that owns the supermarket also owns the building which houses, in addition to the supermarket, China One, Family Dollar, Village Laundry, America's Rent to Own, and Cellular One.

Randal said the grocery business was like any other when it came to rumors. "Rumors in the grocery business are like any other. Sometimes the only way to deal with them is to put the facts out there so people know what's going on."

One customer commented that she had heard the rumor at her workplace but didn't put much stock in it. "I heard people at work talking about it but I come here to shop and it seems like there are always plenty of people shopping."
