Wednesday, January 28, 2004

The Nevada R-5 school district announced the hiring of John Skeans as the Nevada High School head varsity football coach on Tuesday.

"We had a great deal of interest in the head football position with over 30 qualified individuals making application," said Nevada R-5 superintendent, Dr. Ted Davis. "Coach Skeans emerged as the top candidate."

Added Davis, "We are very excited about Mr. Skeans and believe that he will be a dynamic force in developing a positive and strong football program in the long run."

Skeans, a graduate of Ozark High School, grew up in southern Missouri. He quarterbacked Ozark to two Missouri state playoffs in 1986 and 1987.

Skeans entered Central Missouri State University on athletic and academic scholarships, then later transferred to Evangel University, where he blossomed into an all-conference quarterback. He led Evangel to the 1993 NAIA national championship game.

Upon graduation from Evangel, Skeans attended Drury University, where he was a graduate assistant in the biology department.

During the past seven years, he has taught in the Fulton, Mo., school district and has been the offensive coordinator in a football program that has been to the state playoffs five of the past six years.

In addition to football, Skeans has served as the head wrestling coach and assistant track coach.

Skeans, along with his family, will visit Nevada on Friday.
