Wednesday afternoon the eighth grade girls, members of the Personal, Interesting, New, Knowledge Ladies met with high school girls representing all four grades. Speaking as a panel, the high school students explained the challenges the younger students can expect to face as members of the freshman class.
The panel included students Veronica Mosier, Kaitlin Holland, Brittany Crockett, Brea Hughes, Katie Rodick, Shiloh Rutledge, Lauren Compton, Chelsea Fecht, Heather Bledsoe, Pamela Kimmell, Megan Rogers, Kandi Fowler, Kacy Lefevre, and Lonna Lukenbill.
The girls answered questions about topics as diverse as picking a locker mate to choosing sports and extra activities according to the time involved as well as interests.
Some tips included, "you get to see more of your friends, but you'll change and your friends will change,"; "get involved in activities,"; "don't be afraid to continue in sports because you think it will be too time consuming,"; "don't be intimidated by being with older students -- just because they're older doesn't mean they know any more than you do,"; "you'll find it's easy to fit in,"; and, "the more activities you're in the more friends you'll meet." In response to questions, the panel stated that classes would contain all age groups, activity period was explained, various clubs and activities were described. The fact that physical education classes are always coed and how many P.E. classes are needed for graduation was detailed.
The panel explained that the more organized students could be, the easier things would be for them. Tips like "write your homework assignments in your planners so you don't forget,"; "use those planners!"; "prioritize and don't postpone doing homework before other activities"; and, "don't commit to so many activities you get overwhelmed," were some of the comments made most often.
Other topics involved social life. The girls were reminded to be individuals. "You'll get approached by older students from day one," one of the panelists said.
"Don't feel you have to go along with all they suggest just because they are older and you think they know more about what to do," another added.
"You'll find you change a lot when you become a freshman," another panel member said.
After the panel finished, Christi A. Peterson, assistant superintendent, conducted an interactive presentation that covered self-esteem, health, and awareness issues in high school and in later life. Her talk covered 11 habits of highly effective women and the girls discussed how these habits could help them be successful as students and professional women.
