Safer crossing installed

Garry Brammer and Phyllis Humphrey work on the new crossing lights on Austin Boulevard in front of Cottey College, a short distance west of College Street Tuesday afternoon. Crews improved the cross-walk by adding an arm that extends over traffic to hold the flashing yellow lights. "We are so appreciative of MoDOT's efforts to improve the crosswalk for our students," said Mary Haggans, Cottey College's chief financial officer. "The changes have greatly improved the visibility of the crosswalk, and we believe this will increase drivers' awareness of students crossing the street. We are hoping this improved awareness and visibility will add to the safety of our students and the College community as they cross Austin." According to a January press release from the Missouri Department of Transportation, which announced the intent to modify the signal, the project was a joint effort between MoDOT and Cottey College. The total cost of the project was estimated at $19,120 with Cottey picking up $11,313 and the state will pick up $7,807.
