100 years ago:

Republican speaking in VernonCounty

Honorable J.V. McPherson of Aurora, and present representative of Lawrence County, who has been assigned by the Republican Congressional Committee to make a series of speeches in Vernon County was in Nevada today.

He spoke Monday night at Lone Star school house, Tuesday afternoon at Walker, and he will speak tonight at Metz, at Deerfield Thursday night, at Moundville Friday night, and at Nevada Saturday night. Mr. McPherson informed the Mail that he had good audiences both at Lone Star and at Walker. Local Republicans accompany McPherson to points where he speaks.

75 years ago:

Sheriff Butner finds two more cars which had been stolen

Sheriff Butner and Deputy Tow were notified at 8 o'clock Sunday morning that a Ford touring car had been abandoned on Highway No. 71, south of Milo.

They went out and brought the car to Nevada. About noon they found a Wyllis-Knight sedan two miles north of Nevada, which they brought to Nevada.

Papers in the car indicated it was owned in Kansas City.

The supposition is that both cars had been stolen.

Jess M. Banes announces candidacy for Presiding Judge

Jess. M. Banes, prominent Bronaugh farmer, today formally announced his candidacy for Presiding Judge of the County Court on the Democratic ticket subject to the will of the voters in the general election Nov. 2.

No newcomer to the affairs of the County Court, Banes served as judge for two terms from 1948 to 1952.

He said he feels that his experience in the office stands him in good stead to perform the duties of Presiding Judge in an efficient manner being of service to all of the taxpayers in the county.

Mr. Banes has been a farmer all of his life and is engaged in general farming on his 240-acre tract near Bronaugh.
