The Cottey Comets were handed their first home basketball defeat of the season when Labette County Community College visited the Hink Saturday, losing 88-40.
Cottey coach Dave Ketterman said the visitors just had too much athleticism.
"Labette was an outstanding team," Ketterman said. "They had three players that in my estimation are legitimate Division I basketball players, and two more that are probably Division II."
The Labette Cardinals pressed for most of the game, disrupting the Cottey offense and using an advantage in athleticism to keep the Comets off-balance at all times.
The Comets eventually were able to break the press some in the second half, and they played a little better basketball as a result.
Ketterman was especially pleased with the play of Jessie Puskar and Danyca Singleton down on the blocks.
Puskar was usually going against 6-feet, 5-inch tall Joiceline Thesing, giving up six inches in the process, but still was able to score 18 points and pull down 14 rebounds.
Singleton scored six points and had eight rebounds from the other post position.
"I thought those two competed really well inside," Ketterman said.
The Comets were without starting forward Katy Ruiz against Labette, she is nursing a shoulder injury and her status for today's game against Fort Scott Community College is still uncertain.
Another key injury occurred Saturday, when starting point guard Jessica Porter hurt a knee trying to break the press in the first half against the Cardinals.
Porter did not play the second half and is also questionable for tonight's game.
"Hopefully we'll have them back, but if not, we'll just load up with what we've got and go from there," Ketterman said.
The Comets (1-2) face Fort Scott at the Hinkhouse Center today, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
