The University of Missouri Extension Office is preparing for elections for the 2005-'06 term for Extension Council. Eight positions need to be filled, four in the northern district and four from the southern district.

"We need to fill eight positions and right now we only have one, maybe two (who have indicated that they would like to run)," said Pat Miller, University Extension.

"The Vernon County Extension Council is seeking people from all walks of life who are interested in education and the progress of our community," said council member Everett Wolf. "Serving on the extension council is a great way to help make our community a better place for people to live."

The University of Missouri Extension Council serves as a link between county residents and the University of Missouri -- Council members assist in planning and carrying out extension programs. They oversee a budget of $40,000 annually to support the education goals set forth by the council.

Members on Extension Council are representative of the broad backgrounds and needs of the people of Vernon County. Candidates are not required to have any special training but must be 18 years old and live in the district they represent.

"(Candidates should have) a willingness to help the community and to help the Extension Council in the many things that they do," said Jennifer Byers, council member. "(They need to be willing) to learn the various aspects of what the council does -- it's not just agriculture and 4-H."

The Vernon County Extension Council currently meets on the first Thursday of each month.

Nominations for the Vernon County Extension Council must be made by Nov. 22, 2004.

"University of Missouri Extension improves people's lives with educational programs and access to University resources and experts to enhance economic viability; build strong individuals, families and communities; and create and sustain healthy environments." said a press release from the extension office.

In Vernon County, extension programs address various areas including agriculture, nutrition and health, parenting and youth development, family life, consumer education, business and workforce needs, community development and continuing education.
