The Nevada R-5 second graders were each asked to write an essay about why Thanksgiving is special for them.

There isn't room in one article to include all of the essays because they were all great!

Onlookers said it was nice to see that Thanksgiving still represents many of the same things it did to parents and grandparents of the children who wrote the short essays.

Here are some of the sentiments the children shared about Thanksgiving:

"Over the river and through the wood to Grandfather's house we go"

"The most special thing about Thanksgiving is getting together with my family because they care about me."

"Most special is seeing my family. I love my family very much."

"I go to my grandma's house to eat our food. My grandma is the best cook!"

"I get to go to my grandma and grandpa's house and spend that night with them."

"I think spending time with all my family is very special to all of us."

"We don't get to see them very often, and we like to tell three things that we are thankful for."

"My family coming together is special."

"My Mom's whole family comes to the Thanksgiving feast."

"Thanksgiving is special to my family because we go to grandma's house."

"My favorite thing is visiting grandma and grandpa."

To have a first-rate play

"I like playing Bingo and cards with my grandpa."

"My favorite game is playing Monopoly at my great-grandma's house."

"We play games like Sorry, Uno, Skip-Bo, Charades, Dominoes and Checkers."

Hurrah for fun!

"The best part is riding the four-wheeler."

"I like playing with grandma's dog's new puppies."

"I ride horses at my uncle's house."

"We play games, then we eat and play more games, then we have dessert, then we play more games."

"We play football and I get to tackle."

"I like going to the parade every year."

"I like to watch football or a movie on television while we eat delicious food."

Is the pudding done? Hurray for the pumpkin pie!

"I love pies! And ham and beans."

"I love my grandma's homemade pies and turkey."

"I love to eat my mom's pumpkin pie."

"I love my cousin Bonnie's rolls. My favorite food is the turkey."

"Turkey and noodles are the best."

"I like to eat turkey, noodles and mashed potatoes. We watch the parade, then decorate cookies."

"We have lots of yummy food. We have turkey, soup and ham and we make cheesecake."

"My very favorite food is peanut butter fudge."

"I love my mom's cooking."

"I like eating at the table so we don't get dust in the front room."

Of the many that were turned in, three were chosen as first, second and third prize winners

The winning essays included this third place one written by Brett Scott of Mrs. Ast's second grade class:

"The most special part of Thanksgiving is seeing my uncle who is hurt. I need to be there for him. It's a special time for me to help take care of him."

Second place winner is Nathan Candelria of Mrs. Pritchett's class.

"We go to my mom's grave for Thanksgiving. We bring lots of food and call it a buffet. My cousins and me go in the field and play football. Then we eat."

First place winner is Mrs. Beshore's student Meagan Day.

"The most special thing I like to do on Thanksgiving is spending time with my family and friends. Spending time with my family is special to me because when I have a bad thing going on in my life we talk about it."

All of the children said the most special thing about Thanksgiving was to have their families together for the holiday, to have enough good food, and enough time to play with their cousins and extended families.
