Staff members have been busy updating the Nevada R-5 school district's Web site, and several enhancements to the information available should be up and running soon.

During a meeting Wednesday night, Superintendent Dr. Ted Davis presented the board of education with an update on those improvements in the works.

"We are very excited about the prospects and had hoped to demonstrate the district's enhanced Web site. We need to postpone that for another month or two," Davis said. "We have made significant progress having developed the basic organizational chart and hierarchy for setting up a Web site for over 200 data entry users. This will be an ongoing project, but we do hope to provide a demonstration highlighting our revamped Nevada R-5 School District Web site in the next month or two," Davis said. Details of the enhancements should be available soon.

Other reports to the board included one from Geri Johnson, the district's special education director, who gave a presentation on the district's special education programs.

"A significant portion of the Nevada R-5 School District is supported by state and federal monies for special services," Johnson said. "Our special programs are very important to the overall effectiveness of our school district. Without effective special services and special programs our school district would not be Accredited with Distinction in Performance."

Davis reviewed with the board a letter the district received from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education confirming that the district had once again been Accredited with Distinction in Performance based on the 2004 Annual Performance Report.

"In addition to this good news," Davis said. "The district's waiver on an on-site review has been extended for one more year. If the board chooses to accept the waiver, we are assured that the district will not be scheduled for a Missouri School Improvement Program until 2007-'08 at the earliest."

Davis noted that not having the review saves the district "hundreds of hours of work. We would be comfortable with an on-site review but the hours it takes to get ready for it are formidable," Davis said.

The board voted to accept the waiver.

In other business the board:

* Approved moving the date of the March meeting to March 16.

* Approved the summer school program.

* Reviewed a protest by 3M of the valuation of their property, which won't be decided until later in the year.

Reviewed candidates for the April 5 election: Jan Benbrook, Steve Cubbage, Sam Craig DeLaney and Larry Forkner.
