The Cottey Comets got their second Region 16 win of the season Saturday, as they slipped by St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley 57-53 at the Hinkhouse Center.
The Comets (6-17) got clutch play from Katie Taylor and Carol Humphries and great defense from Adriana Futrell to get the win.
"We just seemed to do things right at times," Cottey coach Dave Ketterman said.
The Comets got all six of Taylor's points and all five from Humphries late in the game as they held off the visitors from St. Louis.
"They came up big for us late," Ketterman said of the duo. He also credited Futrell for shutting down Flo Valley star Michelle McGrady.
"Futrell really took her out," Ketterman said.
Cottey defended McGrady with a box-and-one, holding the guard to six points, well below her average of more than 20 per game.
"We decided to control what she did," Ketterman said.
Ketterman gave credit to everybody for the victory.
"It's one of those games where it really is a complete team win," he said.
Cottey plays today at home against Penn Valley at 7 p.m.
