75 years ago:

Kick from a horse proved to be fatal

J.W. Johnson, a substantial and highly esteemed resident of this county who resided for many years north of Eve, passed away in the Main Street Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott early Saturday evening. Mr. Johnson was kicked by a horse in a barn on his farm last Thursday evening causing internal ruptures of a serious nature. He was taken to the hospital in Fort Scott, where he underwent a surgical operation in an effort to save his life but he succumbed at 7:30 o'clock that evening.

50 years ago:

Eight seniors recommended for Quill and Scroll

Eight seniors at Nevada High School have been recommended for membership to Quill and Scroll, international honorary society for high school journalists. They are Wooddy Swearingen, Katherine Norman, Donna Logan, Ted Kachel, Bob Pickett, Betty Benson, Gary Thomas and Bob Rich.

According to the constitution members of Quill and Scroll must be chosen from the students enrolled in high school, who at the time of their election meeting the following requirements: 1. They must by in the upper third of the class in general scholastic standing. 2. They must have done superior work in some phase of journalistic or creative endeavor. 3. They must have been recommended by the advisor.

The group will be formally recognized at the annual award assembly in May.
