The 16-year-old girl who ran from police in a chase -- called off in Nevada but resumed in Lee's Summit last week -- died after spending several days in a Kansas City hospital. The youth was one of two people who were on Commercial Street and attracted the notice of residents. When Officer Mark Burger attempted to speak to her she fled in a car, which she later abandoned, stole a pickup and drove north on U.S. Highway 71.

In Lee's Summit, the girl passed an unmarked police car at a high rate of speed. The offi cer kept the pickup in sight until the girl turned into a resi

dential driveway. Three Lee's Summit police officers attempted to take her into custody but the girl backed the vehicle out of the driveway, striking all three police vehicles.

The pickup traveled out of sight before police could begin a pursuit and when they came over a hill they discovered the pickup had been in an accident and rolled over multiple times. The girl was discovered several minutes after police began searching, she had been ejected from the pickup and rolled under a construction trailer.

She was taken to a Kansas City hospital in critical condition and died Sunday of her injuries.
