Janet Phelps Corn
Janet (Phelps) Corn, 58, passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital, Puyallup, Wash., on April 14, 2005, after a battle with leukemia.
Janet was born July 3, 1946, in Cheverly, Md., to Milton E. Phelps and LaNeta M. Phelps. She lived in Nevada from age 2 until college. She was graduated from Nevada High School in May 1964. For several summers she played in the weekly El Dorado Springs Municipal Band. In the fall of 1964 she entered Evangel University as a Music Major, and was a member of both choir and band. During the summer of 1966, she served as a volunteer at the Teen Challenge Center in New York City. At the end of the second semester in 1967 she left college to spend a year as a VISTA volunteer in West Virginia and Baltimore, Md. Then she returned to college at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where she sang as a member of the Heritage Singers.
On June 21, 1969, Janet married Roy Arlan Corn in Kansas City, Kan. Later they moved to Springfield, where she earned a Sociology degree at Southwest Missouri State College and completed college work she needed to teach music in school. In 1976 they moved to Junction City, Kan., due to Roy's work as a career civilian with the U.S. Army. Janet taught vocal music at Junction City Junior High School from 1976 through June 1986, when she received her Masters in Music Education degree from Wichita State University. And then came another move to Bonney Lake, Wash., since Roy had transferred to Fort Lewis in November 1985. In Tacoma Public School District, Janet taught vocal music from 1986 to January 2005, when she became ill.
Janet's survivors include: Roy, of the home; their son, Andrew and Brooke, his wife, of Tacoma, Wash.; LaNeta Phelps, mother; and Kleetis Wirth, aunt, of Nevada; Bob Wirth, uncle, of Lebanon, Mo.; and cousins.
Janet made a personal decision for Christ when a child, and has been a faithful worker in churches available where she lived, with continuous membership in the Assemblies of God.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Nevada First Assembly of God church, with the Rev. Ted Furry officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m., Friday, in the Henry Corn Family Cemetery, Oak Grove, Mo.
Flowers are a precious way for friends to express their caring, but the family requests that instead of flowers, please consider a contribution in Janet's memory to Teen Challenge International Ministry, 444 Clinton, Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11238, or in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
