The Hume R-8 school board certified election results and named new officers during a meeting conducted April 13. Jeff Thompson, Matt Brooks and Stacey Swickhamer read the oath of office and were sworn in as new board members.

Ralph Franklin was nominated as board president, and elected to the post by a vote of five in favor, one abstaining.

Missy Patton was elected as vice president, Ruth Hale as secretary and Jeff Thompson as treasurer.

Financial considerations led superintendent Ryan Huff to suggest making some staffing changes. He suggested removing two full-time non-certified aids and hiring a full-time teacher in the special education, department, a move which would amount to to a $1,000 savings while giving the current special education teacher badly needed support with administrative tasks that must be completed by a certified person, such as testing, individual education plans, follow-up meetings and so on. Under the new plan, the district's special education staff would consist of two full-time teachers and one paraprofessional with at least 60 college hours.

Following a discussion, the board unanimously approved the change.

Other budgetary issues discussed included an upcoming increase in health insurance premiums for district employees, purchased through the Southwest Missouri Educator's Group. The amount of the increase was undetermined as of the close of the meeting.

In other business, this year's summer school schedule was set, with classes from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 31 to June 25, with a Worlds of Fun Field Trip day set for June 25.

In executive session, the board approved the hiring of several people for the 2005-'06 school year.

Staff members hired are John Roberts, social studies and varsity girls basketball coach; Marsh CAsey, Teresa Taylor, Melody Wykoff, Kelley Hopkins, Hannibal Hinton, Ruth Dale, Katharina Brooks, Paula Coonce, George Wehar, Lisa Brooks, Diane Sneed, Lesa Berry, Angie Orear. The board also approved speech services from Anna Campbell with Ortho Sports Rehabilitation.
