The second annual Caring with Pride Classic golf tournament brought out 102 golfers in 34 teams Friday, May 20 at the Frank E. Peters Golf Course. The tournament, cosponsored by Aquila, Missouri Eagle and R.J. Dutton, helped raise money for Nevada Regional Medical Center to purchase portable X-ray machines for the Emergency Room.
"The portable X-ray machine is used for the ER when patients are unable to be moved," Foundation director Linda Schmitz said. "The policy of the hospital is to have the best equipment possible for both the medical staff and patients. The old X-ray machine is reaching the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced."
The tournament brought forth a lot of friendly competition with the rival teams joking back and forth about who the best, or worst, player was. Dr. Ted Davis, superintendent of Nevada R-5 schools, might have won a prize for most disappointed golfer if one had been given, since he missed a hole in one by a mere two inches, a feat which would have won him a 2005 Buick LaCrosse.
"It was fun and it was for a good cause," Davis said. "It would have been wonderful but a miss is as good as a mile and I never expected to get it but I wouldn't mind trying again next year."
Winning teams for the three categories were: Championship flight -- first, Ferry Funeral Home; second, Berry Bonding Company; third, Ron Smith Insurance.
Flight A -- First, Nevada City Council; second, Len's Truck and Auto; third Community Pharmacy/Casa Azteca.
Flight B -- First, Aquila; second, Anesthesia Consultants; third, Heartland Behavioral Health.
Chris Ellis won the putting contest and Jack Arnold had the longest putt.
Brian Shaw had closest to the pin on hole 4, Larry McCord was closest on hole 7, Derrick Swelishoff was closest on hole 11, and Ted Davis, with his almost car winning drive, was closest on hole 18.
