Merchant says he was swindled

LAMAR, Mo. -- G.M. Usher, a merchant of Minden, Mo., has just brought suit in the circuit court here against the Western Union Telegraph Company to recover $725 lost by him last March through a swindle alleged to have been worked by Connelly, an operator at Parsons.

Usher claims that Connelly was an assistant at Parsons, unknown to the Minden agent, who did know the regular operator at Parsons, a man named Knight. And on March 26, Connelly called up the Minden agent and missent a large amount of money that the Van Camp grocery company wanted to use to buy out some failing merchant. That to save the money Connelly so missent he wanted the Minden agent to help him cash a check for $700 which he would send over with the grocery company's representative, F.N. Markham, who would appear in Minden on the way to buy out the failing merchant. That Connelly sent messages to the Minden agent, purporting to be signed by Knight, and also a message purporting to be signed by the Commercial Bank at Parsons, directing the payment of the check. Connelly also sent the OK, purporting to be signed by Knight and payable to Markham. Usher claims that all of these papers were forged.
