Meaning of Bushwhacker Days
Dear editor:
I'm so thankful to Ms. Harwell for enlightening me on the "burning" issue of what bushwhacker truly means. I mistakenly thought Vernon County Bushwhackers were defending their homes and families against attackers (regardless of their position on slavery). Luckily for me, in the interest of peace and growing unity, Ms. Harwell has disabused me of this pro-slavery mythology.
The question now is what should we call our local celebration? Personally I suggest we rename this local event "We're really sorry we were Bushwhackers Parade." It's kind of a mouthful I admit, but then in the true spirit of reconciliation, no price is too high to pay.
Therefore, to celebrate I propose that once every 100 years we burn down the entire town. (Think of the tourism it would bring in!) That might sound a bit extreme, but certainly no one would doubt where our sympathies lie. And anyway it's the least we can do to truly make amends to our fellow multi-hued Americans and to prove that "We're really sorry we were Bushwhackers."
Andrew Daniels,
Nevada.
