For the second straight year and the fifth time in the past 10, Nevada residents David Ferry and Mike Cragin teamed up to win the 36th Annual Four-Ball Invitational Tournament at Nevada Country Club.
Ferry and Cragin won the 36-hole tournament, played Saturday and Sunday, by shooting a two-day total of 131. They won by five strokes over four other teams in the Championship Flight.
Using a tiebreaker, John Berglund of Orange, Calif., and Don Poole of Kansas City, Mo., finished second.
Finishing third were John Stafford of Charlotte, N.C., and Jim Stafford of Springfield.
Placing fourth were Kevin Triplett of Grand Junction, Colo., and Scott Witt of El Dorado Springs.
Taking fifth in the Championship Flight were Joe Swearingen and David Slaby, both of Nevada.
The tournament was played with each team of two counting the lowest score between them for each hole. Ferry and Cragin shot a scorching 63 on Sunday to run away with the win.
Besides winning the past two Four Ball Invitationals, the same team also won in 1999, 1997 and 1996.
Jerry Dahmer of Lee's Summit, and Jack Smith of Branson, won the A-Flight with a score of 140.
Doug Story Jr. of Pittsburg, Kan., and Mike Middleton of Coppell, Texas, won the B-Flight with a 148.
Gary Davis of Kansas City, Mo., and Gary Davis of Belle Vista, Ark., won the C-Flight with a 150.
The flights were determined by the scores after Saturday's round. The top 13 were in the Championship Flight, the next 15 were in A-Flight, the following 14 were in B-Flight and the final 14 were placed in C-Flight.
After the first round of play Saturday, Berglund and Poole tied with Randy Gammon of Nevada and Don Davis of Milo. The two leading teams each carded 67s on Saturday.
Ferry and Cragin were one shot back on Saturday, tied with Andy Smith of Nevada, and Chris Smith of Lake Lotawana.
The five titles held by the team of Ferry and Cragin is the second most in the history of the tournament. The record is eight titles held by the team of Ferry and Jeff Benbrook. They won titles in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989 and from 1991-1993.
The team of Kevin Triplett and Steve Swander won the title for three consecutive years from 2001-2003.
