Superintendent Dorman was asked to resign by board

The Lamar School Board has asked Prof. Dorman, the superintendent of the Lamar Schools to resign. Sensational charges alleged that the superintendent talked improperly to some of the teachers and pupils. Prof. Dorman emphatically denies the charges. The school board members feels that innocent or guilty Prof. Dorman will be unable to make the school year beneficial while there is such a difference between the superintendent and teachers. It is no alleged that the superintendent made indecent proposals to any of the teachers or pupils, but it is alleged he talked of matters that it is said were improper for him to discuss with the teachers.

Tax adds to price of smokes in the state

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Something new has been added to your Missouri tax bill.

Beginning New Year' Day, tobacco retailers started collecting the state's new two-cent a package tax on cigarettes. The levy was approved by the voters at a special election last Oct. 4, and is expected to produce about $9- million a year for state aid to schools.

A.S. Arenson, state revenue collector, said today several thousand dollars in cigarette takes already have been collected from sale of tax stamps, payment of taxes on present retail stocks and setting tax meters for larger distributors.
