WEBB CITY, Mo. -- In a display of dominance that is rare in Southwest Conference wrestling, the Nevada Tigers trounced the Webb City Cardinals Monday, 66-12.
Nevada won all but one match they wrestled in (also losing one by forfeit) as they collected six pins in their final scheduled dual of the season.
"Our motivation was way up," Nevada head coach Kevin Huck said. "We felt like we needed to come out and prove ourselves."
The Tigers appeared to be still smarting from a close loss to Carthage last week, and they took their frustrations out on the overmatched Cardinals.
"We were still a little burned by what happened in Carthage," Huck admitted.
The Cardinals led early as they got all of their points in the first three matches of the dual.
Nathan Roy pinned Nevada's Wyatt Whitworth at 125 pounds to start the night.
Colby Shepherd evened the score for Nevada at 130 pounds when he pinned Charles Jones with one minute left in the third period.
Nevada forfeited at 135 pounds, giving Webb City a 12-6 lead. That was the last match the Tigers lost.
Matt Kennedy got the ball rolling at 140 pounds, controlling the mat and leading 6-2 before earning a pin with 44 seconds left in the second period.
At 145 pounds, Josh Palmer was battling Jonathan Dahlman in a closely contested match before finally getting the upper-hand in the third. The score was tied at four when Palmer pinned Dahlman with 54 seconds left in the match.
Cole Bond won by forfeit at 152 pounds, one of three Nevada wins that way. Mason Heard (112) and Nash Smith (171) also won by virtue of no opponent.
The two most closely contested battles came at 160 and 215 pounds.
Keith Overton battled asthma and Steve McCurdy to a 9-5 win, in a match that was 5-4 early in the third period.
Ryan Herda, wrestling up a weight, won at 215 over the much bigger Chase Philpot. The match was tight throughout, with Herda getting a 5-2 victory.
At 189 pounds Spenser Daniels also was competing at a weight higher than normal. It didn't matter, as he dominated Adam Booth to a technical fall. Booth did not score in the match.
Ethan Fast and Trey Miller won first-round pins at Heavyweight and 103 pounds, respectively.
Drew Shepherd closed the match with a pin over Bill Bruffy with 24 seconds left in the second period to give Nevada 11 consecutive wins to finish the competition.
Huck said wrestlers were bumped up a weight at 189 and 215 to give Daniels a match.
"We knew they didn't have a 171-pounder and Daniels didn't get to wrestle last week because Carthage bumped their wrestlers," Huck said.
