Assistance for 'circuit breaker' tax rebate to be available at senior center
Tax assistor Shirley Heathman will be providing services at the Nevada Senior Center, located inside the Neal Center at Hunter and Main streets in Nevada, by appointment.
Through Care Connections for Aging Services, volunteers like Heathman will give assistance on income taxes to those age 65 and older who have been certified as totally and permanently disabled to see if they qualify for a rebate based on the previous year's income and taxes or rent paid on one's homestead. A homestead may be a house, apartment, mobile home, nursing home or boarding home. It is not necessary to file federal or state income taxes in order to receive a circuit breaker rebate.
It is necessary to bring a statement of Social Security payments made in 2005, form SSA 1099. This statement should have been mailed to recipients in January. Persons inquiring about the circuit breaker rebate should also bring all statements relating to income, interest, dividends, retirement or other income received in 2005. Those who owned a home for any portion of 2005 should also bring city and county real estate tax receipts or proof of rent paid on the homestead.
Those who did file tax returns last year should bring those as well.
For an appointment, call the center at (417) 667-5847.
