Bronaugh's Morgan Hinkle battles three Montrose players for a rebound during Thursday's GVVCC South Division girls championship game. Montrose won 43-37, moving to the conference title game Saturday.

MONTROSE, Mo. -- The Golden Valley/Vernon County Conference South Division championships were decided Thursday, with the hosting Montrose Blue Jays winning both the boys' and girls' titles.

Montrose, the top seed in both brackets, beat Bronaugh in the girls' game, 43-37, then won the final game of the evening convincingly over the Hume boys, 65-49.

The wins catapult Montrose into the GVVC Conference championship game played Saturday in Butler, against the winner of Thursday's North Division title games.

The South Division third-place games were played before the title contest.

In the girls' action, Sheldon beat Northeast Vernon County 52-36.

The Lady Panthers had three girls in double-figures, led by Ashley Danner's 15 points.

Jerri Moore had 11 points and Ashley Leininger added 10 in the victory.

Randi Carter led the Lady Knights with 11 points, and Darci Baer scored 10.

Sheldon will now play in the fifth-place game in Butler Saturday.

In the boys' contest for third, Bronaugh jumped out to a big early lead, only to watch it slip away as they had to hang on for a 59-56 win over NEVC.

Nick Judd scored 12 first-quarter points and Bronaugh was up 23-2 going into the second when the Knights slowly started chipping away.

Kirk Haddix scored nine of NEVC's 19 points in the second period as they closed the gap to 34-21 at halftime.

In the third period Bronaugh held that 13-point lead until Haddix nailed a trey from the left wing as the buzzer sounded to bring the Knights within 10.

The Knights started the final period with a 10-0 run, aided by three Wildcat turnovers.

Travis Sanderson dropped a short jumper to start the run, and Rob Baer made a layup to make it 51-45.

After a Bronaugh timeout, Judd traveled and the Knights took advantage of it with a 3-pointer by Sanderson to make it a three-point game with just over four minutes to play.

Neither team scored for over a minute until Haddix drained another three, this time from the right corner, tying the game at 51.

Bronaugh senior Will Daniels ended the run with a short jumper in the lane to put the Wildcats back on top, 53-51.

A missed layup by NEVC gave Bronaugh a chance to increase the lead and Joshua Shaw did just that with two free throws.

Bronaugh would hold off the Knights from there, as Haddix missed a potential game-tying three as the final buzzer went off.

"Our kids never quit," NEVC head coach Bobby Brewster said. "They just keep fighting."

"It wasn't a big celebration in the locker room," Bronaugh head coach Tim Judd said. "Fortunately we shot free throws better tonight than we normally do."

Bronaugh (7-13) was six of nine from the line in the fourth period to help secure the win.

NEVC (2-14) lost despite outscoring Bronaugh 35-25 in the second half.

Bronaugh will play in the fifth-place game Saturday.

In the championship games, the Lady Wildcats fought hard but couldn't overcome the solid Lady Jays.

"We'd get right to that point (of taking the lead) and couldn't close the deal," Lady Wildcats head coach David Read said. "It was a good game, I'm proud of them."

Morgan Hinkle led Bronaugh with nine points and three others each scored eight.

Montrose was led by Lauren Eye's 15 points.

The Lady Wildcats will play in the conference's third-place game Saturday in Butler.

In the boys' championship game, Montrose used a 12-2 run to end the first period to take an 18-8 lead and they never looked back.

The Blue Jays (20-2) were led by Cameron Hart, who scored 20 points, while front-court mate Jonathan Schussler added 19.

Clinton Irwin led Hume with 17 points, and Justin Wehar scored 15.

Hume will play in the third-place game Saturday.
