FSHS girls drop second straight
PARSONS, Kan. -- Fort Scott High's girls shot just 13 percent from the field here Friday night as they were held to their lowest point total in 10 seasons by Parsons in Southeast Kansas League play at Harold C. Johnson Gymnasium.
The Vikings avenged a Monday loss in a non-league game at Fort Scott with a 47-24 victory in which they had as many assists as the Tigers did field goals.
Fort Scott's offense has appeared lost the last two games without the injured duo of senior Krista Goltra and freshman Kori Page Rienbolt.
Even though it seems the Tigers still have two or three players capable of scoring, not all of them have been able to recently.
The Tigers (2-3 in the SEK, 12-5 overall) made only six of 45 shots from the field, going 0-for-12 in the second quarter as they were held to one free throw in that period.
Parsons (2-2, 9-7) led 11-8 after one period and was able to extend its lead in the second even though it started one for 12 from the field. By halftime, the margin was 10 points, 19-9.
Fort Scott did fight but could not make any headway in the third quarter. At the end of that period, Parsons' lead was 27-16.
A 6-1 run to start the fourth made it a 16-point game. The margin was 20 at 39-19 with 2:10 remaining.
Afton Gray led the Tigers with 14 points but no one else was able to score more than three. Bridgette Kendricks and Tashanda Jackson paced the Vikings with 10 points each.
Parsons also outrebounded Fort Scott, 49-33, as Jackson hauled down 14 boards. Ashley Russell and Jayci McKenney had six rebounds each for the Tigers.
This was the first time the Tigers had been held to fewer than 30 points since losing a 43-29 decision to Greenwood, Ark. in the second game of the 2003-04 season. They had not been held to fewer than 28 points in any game since the start of the 1996-'97 season.
The varsity contest did not tip off until 7:10 p.m. because the girls' junior varsity game needed three overtimes to determine a winner. Fort Scott eventually prevailed 49-44 with Katelyn Simpson scoring 15 points and Beth Womeldorff 11. Rachel Allen scored all seven of her points in the overtime periods.
Parsons finished the game with just three players on the floor.
Fort Scott will have to work hard Tuesday night if it is to get back on track. That is when the Tigers travel to Iola, Kan. The Fillies, ranked No. 2 in Kansas Class 4A, defeated Fort Scott in a non-league game 42-38 on January 3.
