Bronaugh girls, Hume boys get third at GVVCC tournament
BUTLER, Mo. -- The Bronaugh Lady Wildcats and the Hume Hornets each took third place in the Golden Valley/Vernon County Conference tournament Saturday.
The Hornets, who took second in the South Division last week, played Calhoun, the second team from the North Division. The Hornets won 57-48.
Hume fell behind early, as Calhoun led 13-8 after one quarter.
Clinton Irwin single-handedly kept the Hornets in the game in the first half, scoring 13 of his game-high 23 points as Hume hung in for only a 25-23 halftime deficit.
In the third period Matthew Sears helped on the offensive end, scoring nine of his 15 points and the Hornets led by one going into the final period.
Hume outscored Calhoun 16-8 in the fourth, pulling away for the victory. Irwin added 13 rebounds to pace the Hornets, as they overcame 18 turnovers in the win.
The Lady Wildcats also finished third by beating a North Division representative, knocking off Kingsville 45-24.
Neither team was able to do much offensively in the first half as Bronaugh led 16-14 at the break.
In the second half it was all Bronaugh. The Lady Wildcats outscored Kingsville 13-5 in the third period to blow the game open, led by Whitney Hinkle's five points in the quarter.
Hinkle finished with a game-high 17 points, and Stormi Wilson added 11 as Kingsville didn't threaten in the final quarter.
The Bronaugh boys managed to take fifth place in the tournament by beating the Kingsville boys 42-33 Saturday.
Nick Judd scored 18 points and Will Daniels added 13 to pace the Wildcats, who overcame a 13-8 first-period deficit.
In regular season action this week, the Bronaugh Wildcats and Sheldon Panthers split a boys-girls doubleheader in Sheldon Tuesday.
The Wildcats beat the Panthers in the boys' contest, 51-40.
Joshua Shaw led Bronaugh with 16 points, eight of them coming in the first period as the Wildcats raced out to a 12-4 lead.
Daniels and Judd each scored 15 to support in the winning effort for Bronaugh.
Cody Claflin and Casey Kalleck were both in double figures for Sheldon. Claflin scored 14 points and Kalleck had 12.
In the girls' game Sheldon won 46-33.
Jerri Moore scored 17 points to lead the Lady Panthers and Ashley Danner added 11, as they erupted for 32 second-half points as a team.
Jessica Langford led Bronaugh with 11 points.
In other area games Tuesday, Hume's girls lost to Calhoun 49-26, despite 12 points from Janine Castillo and 11 from Leana Brooks.
