Weather threatens sporting events

Thursday, March 30, 2006

The possibility of severe weather this afternoon has many area sporting events facing the possibility of postponement or cancellation.

The Nevada Tiger baseball team is scheduled to host Carthage in a home opener and Southwest Conference opener this afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Nevada track and field team is scheduled to be in Carthage for an invitational meet.

The tennis team is supposed to visit Joplin at 4:30 p.m. for a match.

All three events will hinge on the weather, which according to www.weather.com there is an 80 percent chance of precipitation in the area. The Web site threatens, "storms becoming widespread and possibly severe in the afternoon."

The site says the possibility of high winds and hail exist with the potential for tornadoes to form.

If the weather does hinder the possibility of completing the events, in all likelihood the tennis match against Joplin would simply be canceled and the baseball game against Carthage would be postponed to a later date.

"Hopefully the weather cooperates," Nevada baseball coach Jared Brown said about today's game. "Maybe it will wait for us (to play)."
