Nevada track visits Clinton; boys take third, girls sixth

CLINTON, Mo. -- The Nevada Tiger boys' track team placed third out of 15 schools Saturday, finishing less than 32 points behind champion Warrensburg.

Nevada scored 92.5 points, falling short of Warrensburg's 124, and Clinton's 104.

The 3,200-meter relay team and high jumper Nathan Gragg each won their events.

Gragg cleared 6-feet, 4-inches to take first in the high jump. The team of Mason Benn, Trevor Hinkle, Mark Reed and Curtiss Davis ran a time of 8-minutes, 24.03 seconds to pace the field in their relay.

Tim Williams took second in the pole vault, while teammate Tyler Werner finished third. Each cleared 12-6.

Also placing third for Nevada were Jacob Cherry in the long jump; Mark Reed in the 400; Dan Lovinger in the 300 hurdles and Benn in the 800.

Benn also placed fourth in the 1,600, and was part of the 1,600 relay team that was fourth. Reed, Blake Sanderson and Thorne Penrod were also on the team.

Eric Good placed fourth in the long jump, a mere inch behind Cherry.

Lovinger finished fifth in the 110 hurdles, and Good was fifth in the high jump.

Cherry was sixth in the triple jump and Good was eighth in the event.

Meanwhile, the 800 relay team was seventh and the 400 relay team was eighth.

On the girls' side, Nevada had 38 points, as Warrensburg ran away with the team title with 197.5.

The best finish for the girls was a second-place tally by the 400 relay team. Cassie Driskel, Megan Smith, Brittany Pettibon and Taylor Means ran on the team.

Smith was third in the 100 hurdles, the best individual finish for Nevada.

The team of Means, Pettibon, Driskel and Smith teamed up again to take fifth in the 800 relay.

Jordan Webb was fifth in the discus and Molly Ferree was fifth in the high jump.

Means was sixth in the 200, and Vanessa Hancock was sixth in the 800.

Pettibon placed seventh in the 100, and so did Webb in the shot put.

Erica Becker was eighth in the triple jump, as was Pettibon in the 200.

Nevada's ninth- and 10th-grade athletes will participate in a meet in Carthage today, while the varsity is in Girard, Kan., Friday.
