Nevada Speedway report -- July 1

Good friends, good company and good racing Saturday, along with the Southern Midget Racing Series and fireworks. It was a great night for all attending. The Southern Midget Racing Series came from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri and New Zealand to race at Nevada Speedway Saturday night. I think we all need to let the track owner know how much we appreciated the great fireworks display, which happened at intermission. Way to go Tina. Point leaders changed in two divisions and we have really close points battles in most divisions.
Late Model heat race winners were Jack Simmons, Erie, Kan., and Robert Coffman, Fort Scott, Kan. The Budweiser Firecracker 40 Feature started with Simmons getting the lead. Ron Bolin Sr. and Jerry Morgan got together, bringing out the yellow flag and an original lineup restart was called. Simmons again jumped into the lead at the start. Chris Hawkins, Marty Danner, Mark Daye, Shannon Phillips and several other cars got bunched up and another yellow flew. On the third attempt to get the race started Simmons again got the lead. Aaron Seabaugh went into the concrete wall, which brought out another yellow flag and closed the field behind Simmons for the restart. Donnie Timmerman and Coffman got together resulting in Coffman going into the wall. Another yellow flew for parts in the track. On the restart, Danner, Steve Johnson, Phillips and John Fennewald all got together, sending Danner into the wall and another yellow flew. Simmons was in the lead for the restart and held off a strong challenge from Hawkins to claim the win, his third of the season, the trophy and the $1,500 prize money.
Modified heat race winners were Tim Selzer, Archie, and John Fennewald, Appleton City. The thundering Modified's took to the track for their Feature. Fennewald took the lead at the start. A yellow flew as Keith Simmons and Brian Hall got together and spun. Fennewald led the field down to take the green flag. Fennewald held the lead through the balance of the race to claim the win, his second of the season and second in a row.
Street Stock heat race winners were Zack Marsh, Fort Scott, Kan., and Karl Lehmann, Nevada. Marsh got the lead at the start of the Feature. Lehmann gained the lead but Marsh quickly came back to take the point. They traded the lead several times before the yellow flew as Doug Chrisenbery and Dustin Wyland got together. Marsh was in the lead for the restart. Chrisenbery and Wyland got together again, bringing out another yellow flag and closing the field behind Marsh for the restart. Marsh was able to hold the lead and capture the win, his first ever win.
Factory Stock heat race winners were Tiny Joles, Fort Scott, Kan., Chris Hendren, Nevada, and Billy Shadden, Osawatomie, Kan. The B-Feature started off with Norman Mackley in the lead. He held the lead through the entire race to claim the win. Mackley, Danny Thurston, Pat Burns and John Null all moved to the back of the A-Feature. The A-Feature started with Joles in the lead. Chris Hendren spun bringing out the yellow flag and closing the field behind Joles for the restart. Zack Simmons brought out the next yellow as his tire came completely off the rim. Joles was again in the lead for the restart. Joles maintained the lead through the balance of the race to claim his first win of the season.
Mini Stock heat race winners were Robert Somers Jr., Nevada, and Matt Rose, Liberal. Rose quickly jumped into the lead at the start of the Feature. There was a scary moment as Rose and second place Brent Knight came up onto the slower car of Kelly Compton and they bumped. Knight was able to gain the lead and held it until the last lap when Rose again claimed the lead and the victory. This was his seventh of the season.
Southern Midget Racing Series heat race winners were Mike Hess, Petersburg, Ill., Russ Harper, Watkins, Colo., and Donnie Lehmann, Springfield, Ill. Gary Altig got the lead at the start of the Feature. Brady Bacon gained the lead and maintained it through the balance of the race to claim the win.
