Creating a bridge between generations

Tuesday morning, Nancy Thompson, president of the Tri-County Genealogical Society, presented a short program at the Vernon County Senior Center concerning family histories.
Thompson explained that while we often enjoy reading about people from the past and how they lived their lives day by day, too often people see their own lives as typical or boring.
She added that it is the details of our lives that our descendants will want to know about.
"Our relatives tie us to our history," Thompson said, speaking of the older generation's knowledge of their own parents and grandparents.
"We often regret we hadn't asked our own parents or grandparents questions about their lives," Thompson said. "After we lose them, we realize our own children or grandchildren aren't asking us these questions either."
Thompson is offering senior citizens an opportunity to leave a taped history for their families.
Using a simple cassette audio recorder, seniors can record their memories of their childhood, how they met their spouses, what kind of work they've done during their lives and what they are most proud of in their lives.
The tapes will be transcribed and a copy placed in the genealogy room at the Nevada Public Library. The original tape will be archived in the Bushwhacker Museum and a copy of the tape will be given to the participant.
Any senior who wishes to participate in the free program simply needs to call either Nancy Thompson at (417) 922-3596; Nancy Mal-com at (417) 667-2024 or Sylvia Ackley, coordinator of the Senior Center at (417) 667-5847 to schedule an interview. Interviews will be conducted at the Vernon County Senior Center.
