In a recent press release the Missouri Pecan Growers Association, stated that last year in 2005 Vernon County had an "excellent" pecan crop and this year's outlook seems to be very bright.
"Nearly 2.5 million pounds of pecans were harvested in Vernon and Bates counties last season." stated the recent press realease.
Accordingly, it was known as one of the largest harvest seasons in recent memory. To make the harvest even sweeter for producers, prices paid for pecans were very strong due to the shortened crop season caused by hurricanes in the Gulf states. Georgia's pecan crop this year is estimated at about 50 percent below normal and many areas in Texas are suffering from drought conditions. New Mexico, another large pecan-producing state had a poor nut set this year due to the alternate barring tendency of pecan trees. The gulf coast states, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, are still recovering from extensive hurricane damage.
"National pecan production estimates are predicting the 2006 crop to be 60-70 percent of an average. Pecan growers are advised that now is a good time to scout your grove and determine the size of your crop. Although the heat may prevent any immediate action, now is a good time to evaluate your grove to determine what improvements need to be made before harvest begins. Pruning low limbs, removing downed trees and branches, cutting out unwanted saplings and vines and mowing are a few common chores needed in most pecan groves." stated the Missouri Pecan Growers Association.
Vernon County has the most acres of organic pecan production in the United States. Harvest season for pecan crops usually begins around Halloween and equipment is available for those who need it. Missouri Northern Pecans advises farmers, that custom pecan cleaning is available through the company.
Missouri Northern Pecans is the area's largest buyer of both organic and conventional pecans. They offer their clients custom pecan cracking as well as selling many pecan products. Area residents can also procure pecan cracking services at Beisly's service station, Wilson Pecan Farm and Wagner's Nut House.
