Comets send Messenger home
Nevada Daily Mail
NEVADA, Mo. -- The Cottey Comets made quick work of the Messenger College Eagles from Joplin Thursday, in the Hinkhouse Center.
The Comets needed less than an hour to sweep the visitors, 30-14, 30-11, 30-8, despite still not being 100 percent.
Several Cottey players are still battling a stomach ailment, and it showed on the court as the Comets were a step slow and not particularly sharp.
That didn't stop Cottey from trouncing the overmatched Eagles, including an impressive 14-0 run in the third and final game, that turned a 12-4 score into a 26-4 rout.
The Comets didn't trail in any game the entire match. Cottey started the first game with an ace by Lindsay Rader, then went up 4-0 before Messenger even knew what hit them.
Cottey registered 11 aces in the first game, including four consecutive by Vanessa McCoy to make it 10-4.
Cottey scored the first two points of the second game, and led 6-1 before Messenger could catch their breath.
The third game was the most dominant. Cottey jumped out to an 8-0 lead to crush the Eagles' spirits.
As a team, Messenger managed only two kills the entire match.
Cottey is home again Saturday against Labette County (Kan.) Community College. The match starts at 2 p.m., at the Hink.
