NEVADA, Mo. -- The Cottey Comets topped the Labette County (Kan.) Community College Cardinals Saturday, at the Hinkhouse Center, 30-25, 30-25, 30-23.
The Comets overcame sloppy serving to get the win by coming up with key points during each of the three games.
The Comets led 26-24 in the first game before the Carinals served one into the net, then followed that up with a double touch, putting the Comets up 28-24.
Amber Hayward's ace made it 29-24, and after a serve that went wide, the Cardinals had an error of their own and failed to get the ball over the net to give Cottey a 30-25 win.
The Comets had seven serving errors in the first game, 15 in the entire match.
"You can't do that against solid teams," Cottey head coach Marla Kannady said.
In the second game Cottey led 5-1 early, but Labette went on a 9-2 run to take a 10-7 lead.
The Comets trailed as late as 23-22, but a kill by Michelle Schulte tied the game, and a kill by Vanessa McCoy gave Cottey a 24-23 lead.
The Comets didn't trail again in the second game.
The third contest was back and forth until Cottey pulled away after a 15-13 lead.
Hristina Denic had a key block and Mary Cunningham had a pair of kills as the Comets opened up a 23-15 edge.
As the game wore down, a Denic kill made it 28-23, another Hayward ace made it 29-23 and the final point came on an errant hit by Labette to ice the match.
The Comets improved to 12-4 this season with the victory.
Cottey hosts defending Region 16 champion Longview Community College out of Lee's Summit today. That match begins at 7 p.m., at the Hinkhouse Center. Longview handed Cottey one of their four losses on Sept. 7, in Lee's Summit.
