A host of cancellations reported as Vernon County digs out from under the inches of ice, light snow

The winter storm that weighed down the area -- much of the Midwest, in fact, with inches of sleet and ice shut down most activities throughout the area. Residents are staying home -- and cancellations continue today.

A regular meeting of the Nevada City Council, slated for tonight, has been canceled and will be conducted next week.

As early as Sunday afternoon, outlying school districts were announcing Monday closures, with Rich Hill being one of the first to announce its doors would be closed. The school remains closed today, as does the Hume district, Nevada R-5, Rich Hill R-4, Northeast Vernon R-1, Sheldon R-8, Bronaugh R-7, Liberal, El Dorado Springs R-2, Fort Scott and Lamar as well as Calvary Christian School in Nevada, St. Mary's in Nevada, the Cedar Ridge State School in Nevada, Nevada Head Start and more.

Classes at Crowder College's Nevada campus will not resume until next Monday.

Today's cancellations, reported to a local radio station, also include Nevada Regional Medical Center's pace exercise and child birth classes, the Primary Learning Place pre-school in Nevada, the 11:30 a.m. meeting of the First Christian Church Widows Group, the cardiac rehab department and the health outreach transportation vans at Nevada Regional Medical Center, the 1 p.m. meeting of DW PEO chapter, a Milo- Oakdale 4-H meeting, the CCPA choir practice at the Nevada High School and a Tiger Cub Scout Pack 117 meeting at the First Christian Church, Nevada.

A Wonderful Animals Giving Support meeting originally scheduled for yesterday will be conducted Jan. 22.

Tonight's Southwest Conference basketball doubleheader between Nevada and Carthabe has been postponed as have the basketball games between Rich Hill and Sheldon, the Nevada Tiger wrestling team's match at Webb City and the Nevada Tiger freshman boys visit to Pittsburg, Kan.

A dinner and meeting for residents at Fairground Estates was also canceled.
