The Moundville city council is serious about keeping the city clean. George Bragg found that out the hard way and the city council is hoping that any one else who can't keep their property clean takes the hint.
The Village of Moundville has several ordinances on the books regarding property maintenance and for the second time in less than a year they have had to take action.
Bragg was recently taken to court by the Moundville City Attorney, Ron Fisk, and was ordered to clean up his property by Judge Neal Quitno.
Mayor Lyman Bott said that the majority of Moundville citizens are behind the effort to keep the community clean.
"There are six of us on the council and we all try to work together for the city. We're proud of Moundville, and we'd like it to stay a place to be proud of," Bott said. "We get people coming up to us at the meetings telling us that they like what we're doing. I'd say 90 percent of the people are behind us on this."
Bott said that the council had tried to work with Bragg for over a year but he had not cooperated, forcing the city to take the step of taking him to court.
"We would rather have done this without going to court," Bott said. "It's kind of hard on our budget, we could have used that money to fill potholes instead."
The Moundville council sees to it that the infrastructure is taken care of but spending money on a court case could delay when something gets done.
"This isn't going to stop us from filling potholes, we'll get that done," Bott said. "It might slow it some."
According to Bott the ordinances were well thought out and were the result of hard work by Fisk. They serve to insure that property owners take care of their property but don't try to control too much.
"Ron Fisk updated the ordinances and codes," Bott said. "He does a good job and the codes are enforceable."
