Nevada relays set school marks at state sectionals

BRANSON, Mo. -- A pair of Nevada girls' relay teams set school records and seven Tiger athletes qualified for state at the sectional track and field championships in Branson Saturday.

The 4x100 meter relay and 4x200 meter relay teams both broke previous school records as they both qualified.

The 4x100 meter team of Katelyn Brier, Afton Baldwin, Taylor Means and Brittany Pettibon won the sectional title with a time of 50.73 seconds.

They edged Bolivar's team, which was seeded higher, and finished with a time of 51.08.

It was the only win by Nevada athletes at the sectional meet.

The 4x200 team of Mariah Mock, Baldwin, Means and Pettibon placed second, with a time of 1:47.03.

Bolivar turned the tables this time, winning with a time of 1:46.56 despite having a slower seed time.

Individually, Nevada had three place high enough to qualify for state.

Tyler Werner was third in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 6-inches. Ethan Hobbs of McDonald County cleared 15-0 to win it.

Pettibon was third in the 100 meters, finishing with a time of 12.87. The winner was Dea Dea Sieckmann of Owensville, with a time of 12.39.

Jacob Cherry placed fourth in the triple jump, clearing 41-4.75. The winner was Tyler Vincent of Osage, with a jump of 42-8.

The Tigers had two athletes finish just one place shy of qualifying.

Dan Lovinger was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles, turning in a time of 41.27, just .03 behind Eldon's Joe Sash for the final state berth. Cullen Barr of Springfield Catholic won the event with a time of 40.51.

Mariah Mock was fifth in the 200 with a time of 26.78. The winner was Bolivar's Kelley Good 25.62.

Other Nevada athletes at sectionals: Amanda Wilson was sixth in the discus (108-8); Trevor Hinkle was sixth in the 800 (2:02.18, a PR) and eighth in the 1,600 (4:50.78); Cherry was seventh in the long jump (19-2.75).
