A solemn and respectful crowd -- mostly veterans and their families -- gathered on the courthouse lawn at 11 a.m., Monday, for a Memorial Day remembrance hosted by the American Legion Post No. 2 and VFW Post No. 2175. Nevada Air Force Junior ROTC member William Breckinridge places flowers on Vernon County's memorial to its war dead. Also during the ceremony, Sgt. Lawrence Cripps presented the annual Memorial Day address; and Etta Webb, Diana Duncan, Novella Brinkman and Tina Groves, members of the American Legion Leon Ogier Post No. 2 Auxiliary, sold poppies to the crowd, with the proceeds going to provide assistance to needy veterans and the widows and children of veterans.
