Story, Kisling killed in weekend car crash near Carthage
A June 23 traffic crash on a rural road near Carthage took the lives of two teenagers and seriously injured two others.
According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 14-year-old McKenzie R. Kisling and 16-year-old Kayla D. Story, both of Carthage, were killed when the 1999 Ford Mustang, driven by 16-year-old Chelsie N. Huffman, also of Carthage, ran off the west side of County Road 120, about two miles east of Carthage, struck a utility pole and overturned, ejecting all four of the occupants.
Kisling and Story were pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Coroner Jerry Niel. Huffman was transported to St. John's hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries; and another passenger in the car, Rachel J. Crumm, 16, of Carthage, was transported to Freeman West hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries.
Since the crash occured, the Carthage community has poured out its heart to the families of the teenagers, and photos taken by the Carthage Press show messages of love and loss left at the crash site.
Story is the granddaughter of Eugene and Karen Story, Nevada, who survive. Other survivors include her parents Kerry and Sarah Story, Carthage; two sisters, Ryenn Story and Faith Story, Carthage; maternal grandparents, Harry and Shirley Fields, Mt. Vernon; eight aunts and seven uncles.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. , today, in the First Church of the Nazarene, Carthage. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
Memorial gifts are suggested to the Carthage Senior High School in care of the Carthage R-9 Foundation, The Gideons International or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
