Martha Adelle Carrier
Martha Adelle Carrier, age 80, of Harwood, Mo., passed away Monday, June 11, 2007, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. She was born July 21, 1926, in Harwood, Mo., to the union of Oscar William and Mabel Elizabeth (Wilson) Waggoner.
Martha attended grade school locally in Harwood and then high school in El Dorado Springs, Mo. After graduating she also attended Cottey College in Nevada, for one year. On July 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to James Edward Carrier in Fort Scott, Kan., and to this union three sons were born. During her husbands military years in the Air Force, the family lived in many parts of the United States including: Virginia, Kansas, New York, South Dakota and Alaska, and also two bases overseas in Okinawa and Germany. In 1972, after Jim's retirement from the Air Force, they once again made their home in Harwood.
Upon their return, Jim worked for the United States Postal Service and Martha worked as the Deputy Circuit Clerk of Vernon County. In her spare time Martha enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was known to be an excellent pie maker. She was a long-time member of the Harwood United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, El Dorado Springs Chapter No. 440 for more than 50 years.
Survivors include her husband, James Carrier of the home in Harwood; three sons, Dr. James D. Carrier and his wife Connie of Lakeland, Fla., Dr. Gary A. Carrier and his wife Becky of Cape Coral, Fla., and Bill Carrier and his wife Mary of Parkville, Mo.; six grandchildren, Laura Moloney, Heather Carrier, Mark Carrier, Christopher Carrier, Jason Carrier and Benjamin Carrier; four great-grandchildren, Colby Moloney, David Moloney, Rebecca Moloney and Emily Carrier. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Tristan Carrier.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 14, at the Harwood United Methodist Church in Harwood, with the Rev. Don Bliss and pastor Pat Meyers officiating. Musical selections were provided by Alta Bliss and Benjamin Carrier. Pallbearers were Mark Carrier, Jason Carrier, Benjamin Carrier, James Carrier, Gary Carrier, Bill Carrier, Christopher Carrier and Heather Carrier. Honorary pallbearers were Laura Moloney and Colby Moloney. Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood, under the direction of Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
