Schell City residents injured in Monday crash in Vernon County

A Monday afternoon crash left two Schell City residents injured, but the driver of a second vehicle apparently escaped without injury, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The report said that the accident took place at about 12:45 p.m., on Route C at Dalton Road, when a 1992 Chevrolet truck, driven by 59-year-old Joseph Schmidt, Harwood, turned left in the path of a 2007 Ford Taurus driven by 49-year-old Cathy S. Schlup of Schell City, who was northbound at the time.

Schlup's vehicle struck the truck then veered off the road and overturned. Schlup suffered minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to Cedar County Memorial Hospital. Her daughter, Summer J. Schulp, 25, a passenger in Schlup's vehicle, also suffered minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to Cedar County Memorial Hospital. Schmidt was not injured.

An unrelated crash over the weekend left 69-year-old John Hunt of Nevada injured, after he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. According to a report from the patrol, the 2000 Chevrolet pickup Hunt was driving was southbound on U.S. 71 in the Nevada area at about 2 p.m., when it ran off the west side of the road, struck a concrete barrier, returned to the road and overturned several times.

Hunt suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Nevada Regional Medical Center. A golden retriever dog in the vehicle at the time of the crash is still missing, the report said.

The driver of the 1992 Chevrolet truck was not at fault in the accident involving the car driven by Schlup. The truck was making a left hand turn when the car tried to pass in a no passing zone and the truck clearly was signaling to make the turn. The driver of the car was cited for the accident but you make it sound like the truck driver was at fault. Please state all the facts so the people that read your paper understand the truth.

There were 3 people in the car that was involved in this accident. One being a 7 year old little boy. How much sense would it have made, to attempt to pass this truck, if he had his turn signal on? The driver of the car was NOT cited for any wrong doing. If you go to the scene of the accident, you will see that it was in fact marked as a passing zone. The driver of the truck was in fact at fault, even if only by failing to use his turn signals, and inattention. Maybe readers should get the facts straight from someone personally involved before they post that the paper aired the story wrong.

I know the Schlup family very well and was at the scene of the accident and I know that there were no citations issued to anyone-so get your facts straight. I also know that the accident was not a no passing zone. Also IF the driver of the truck had looked in his mirror before turning this accident would never have happened. This man even stated this same thing has happened to him before! Maybe someone should think about reviewing his driving record! He was clearly at fault.
